What's the Alternative, Jennifer Harper-Deacon
'Q I am deaf, and my ears frequently get waxy. I have hearing aids, but they are not much use if my ears are blocked. My GP has told me that it would be unwise for me to have my ears syringed as often as they seem to need it. Is there any alternative that would help?
A Hopi ear candling, or thermo-auricular therapy, can be used to treat the ear, nose and throat. Ear candling has been used all over the world for thousands of years in many ancient cultures in India, Mexico, Tibet and Egypt.
Hopi ear candles are used today as a relaxing treatment and to address a number of problems relating to the ear. The hollow candles are made from natural ingredients, including beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St John's wort, camomile, betacarotene and organically grown flax.
A candle is placed in the ear and lit while held in a vertical position. This vaporises the candle's ingredients and forms a seal that enables wax and other impurities to be drawn out. There will be a warm, comfortable feeling and a slight crackling sound as the candle burns.'
